ATTENDANCE CAMPAIGN:

Wow!  We are in difficult and dark times in terms of public education in our beautiful and amazing state of California.  Because of this, we are in dire need of your help! We need to create a team effort to buoy up everything that we NEED TO BE ABLE TO OFFER to your children….our scholars of the present and future!
I often make the mistake of assuming that you, our incredible families, have a clear understanding of how attendance affects our school.  It is important that I explain clearly how tardies and absences attack and drain our budget.  Unfortunately, in order to provide services to our scholars, we need funding from the state government.  That funding comes to us in connection with each student’s attendance. Each student is supported with $27.75 per day. Each time a student is absent, the school experiences a loss of $27.75.  Here at Del Mar, we have an average of at least 15 students a day. That means that our school loses $416.25 per day.  Over the course of a 180-day school year, our students lose $74,925.00.  WOW! Following are ways that you can help!

  • Arrange Dr. and Dentist appointments, when possible, for after school hours.
  • If you cannot arrange Dr. and Dentist appointments outside of school hours, bring your child to school either after or before the appointment.  Each Friday is a short day. This makes more time available for appointments.
  • If you need to take your child out of school for less than 5 days……perhaps you have an out of town emergency….have your child come to school in the morning while you pack!
  • If you must be away for 5 days or more, you can fill out the appropriate paperwork in the office that qualifies your scholar for Independent Study.  Your scholar will be given schoolwork to complete over the time that they are absent from school. Upon their return, your scholar must turn the work into their teacher in order to receive credit and not be counted as absent.
  • If your child says that he/she does not feel well enough to attend school in the morning but he/she has no fever, send them anyway.  You can always check in the office to see how he/she is doing.
  • There are 365 days in a year.  Our scholars have the privilege of attending school for 180 days per year.  Basically, our students are only able to attend school half of the year.  With this in mind, I have high hopes that attending school is the top priority!

Finally, I definitely do not want you to feel that you should bring your scholar to school if they are ill with a fever.  We respect the down time needed to get over an illness!

THOUGHT FOR THIS WEEK: The school is the last expenditure upon which America should be willing to economize.        -Franklin D. Roosevelt
